The King Edward Mine Museum Reception and Shop is the first line of contact that our visitors have with the museum.

We welcome people from all ages and backgrounds, and have many international visitors, especially from USA, Germany, and Netherlands.  Some have no knowledge of Cornish Mining and just want to find out more, and some have a deep connection with mining through their family or their work. Contact with such interesting people makes volunteering very pleasurable.

All our museum tour guides and reception staff are volunteers.     This is an interesting place and friendly reception area and you would be made very welcome.    Please email info@kingedwardmine.co.uk for details.

Volunteering at King Edward Mine

You can help at King Edward Mine

There is always something to be done as the mine is over 150 years old and comprises six Grade II* listed buildings along with the 22 acres estate.

We have a large number of volunteers at present, but we would be particularly interested if you would like to join us as as one of our regular museum guides.   One day per week is a typical commitment.

Our guides come from a variety of backgrounds,  and an interest in Cornish mining heritage is the best qualification.

We would always be interested to hear from anyone interested in maintenance of our equipment and models or estate management.

There are a number of other areas where we would welcome extra help such as education, health and safety,  administration including data management and curatorial. We have thousands of items to catalogue and conserve, and these can be fascinating to any historian.

We would also welcome help in our reception. This is one of the key roles for King Edward Mine as our staff are the public face of our museum each season and interact with our visitors who come from all over the world.

One day a week is a typical commitment through the summer (April to October).

Abandoned metalliferous mining sites occur throughout Cornwall, making an important contribution to Cornwall's nature-conservation resource.

The key habitats on site are the heathland and bare contaminated ground.

The outside team have planted 16 Cornish varieties of apple trees and plan to add “ribbons” of wildflowers.

Cutting grass and keeping paths clear continues to be the main priority of the outside team. The team have been working hard, cutting gorse and improving the access.
