Cornish Buildings Group Commendation
Each year, the Cornish Buildings Group make awards for the best of recently completed or renovated buildings. These include private, commercial and public developments, renovations and small building or landscape improvements. There is very tough competition as there are some outstanding architectural practices in Cornwall.
At the ceremony on Friday 17th June 2011, King Edward Mine was awarded a commendation - see cornishbuildingsgroup/news .
Joanne Laing, the awards organiser, said 'On a single Sunday in May we visited and judged 10 buildings short listed from nearly 50 entries. The standard, as always, was so high and this year we saw more conservation and restoration projects than new-builds. After much debate we selected what we perceived to be worthy winners and tonight's award ceremony has been a great occasion of celebrating the very best in Cornish building and design'.
The CBG commendation for King Edward Mine was for the new winder and compressor house which replaced the one that burnt down in 1957. The architect was Martin Richards who worked to create a true representation of the original building. All buildings on the complex are Grade II*, and so great attention to detail was needed so that the new building was suited to this uniquely historic site.
The building contractor was Gloweth Ltd of Truro who used sympathic materials, such as a natural slate for the roof, timber weather boading and a rich oak panelled interior.
The building houses the original Holman's steam winder and a Harvey's Foundry compressor.
